About Bharatpur
Bharatpur is a small former princely state on the eastern edge of Rajasthan, closer in feel and geography to the Braj region around Mathura than to the desert cities further west on the route. Its fort, Lohagarh, was never taken by direct assault in its history — a point of local pride — but the town's real claim to fame today is entirely ecological.
Keoladeo Ghana National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, began life as the private duck-hunting reserve of Bharatpur's maharajas before its conversion into a protected wetland. It's now one of the most important bird habitats in Asia, sheltering both resident species and thousands of migratory birds that arrive each winter from as far as Siberia.
