The Palace on Wheels is India's most celebrated luxury train — and for good reason. Inaugurated in 1982 and jointly operated by the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) and Indian Railways, it has welcomed guests from across the world for over four decades. If you're planning to travel in 2026, this guide gives you everything you need to understand the costs involved.

Understanding the Cabin Classes

The Palace on Wheels offers three cabin categories, each delivering a genuine luxury experience — they differ primarily in space and configuration:

Deluxe Cabin — The entry-level luxury cabin. Named after one of Rajputana's former princely states, each cabin features twin or double beds (request your preference at booking), a private en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, and 24-hour butler service. This is the most popular choice for solo travelers and cost-conscious couples.

Super Deluxe Suite — Identical in heritage character to the Deluxe, but larger. A separate sitting area, upgraded bathroom fittings, and priority boarding distinguish it. Most popular with couples celebrating anniversaries, honeymoons, or milestone birthdays.

Presidential Suite — The most exclusive accommodation on the train. A two-room layout with a separate living room, full luxury bathtub, and a dedicated personal butler. Available in double occupancy only. Books out earliest — often 9–12 months before departure.

When to Travel: Peak vs. Off-Season

The Palace on Wheels runs from approximately October through March (peak season) and sometimes into April/September (shoulder). The summer months (May–August) see an off-season at significantly reduced fares, though Rajasthan's heat is considerable.

For most international travelers, the sweet spot is November through February — pleasant temperatures, golden light, and the full richness of Rajasthani cultural festivals.

What's Included in the Fare

  • All accommodation for 7 nights
  • All meals (breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner — including room service)
  • Guided excursions at all 8 destinations
  • English-speaking certified guides at every stop
  • Entry fees to major monuments
  • Ranthambore Jeep/Canter safari (subject to forest permit availability)
  • All local transfers by air-conditioned coach
  • Welcome ceremony, onboard entertainment, and cultural performances

Not included: International flights, India visa, travel insurance, alcoholic beverages, and personal expenses.
